Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is characterised as chronic swelling of a body part for more than 3 months duration. Lymphoedema is caused by impaired or reduced lymphatic function resulting in accumulation of protein-rich interstitial fluid in the body’s tissues.

At Sturt Road Physio and Chandlers Physio we treat people with both Primary Lymphoedema from birth, and Secondary Lymphoedema from Cancer, Surgery, Radiotherapy or other causes. We also treat people with Lipoedema, which is a genetic condition and occurs because of the abnormal accumulation of fat under the skin.

Our treatment approach can include all or some of the following treatments:

  • Education
  • Skin care
  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Exercise
  • Prescription of compression therapy
  • Compression bandaging
  • Intermittent pneumatic compression
  • Kinesiotaping
