CLINICAL PILATES

What is Pilates?

Individually tailored EXERCISE to:

  • STABILISE and strengthen your spine
  • Improve your FLEXIBILITY
  • TONE your muscles.

It will help you lead a more ACTIVE LIFESTYLE with LESS PAIN.

Clinical Pilates involves low impact, dynamic exercises based on specialised equipment, or on a mat. Our physiotherapists design your program using CUTTING EDGE RESEARCH. Pilates is currently being used by professional dancers, gymnasts, English Premier League Soccer Players, Netballers, Cricketers and AFL Footballers. BUT, more importantly the people it helps the most are everyday people who want to:

  • Recover from injury
  • Reduce their stiffness
  • Become more flexible
  • Prevent osteoporosis
  • Tone muscles and flatten the tummy area
  • Relax
  • Improve sporting performance, eg golf, cycling and running
  • Get the most out of their bodies so they can do what they want for as long as they want and feel great!

GETTING STARTED

You need to attend an initial assessment with one of our physiotherapists prior to commencing a Pilates class. This enables us to identify any injuries or needs as well as to teach you the basic principles of Pilates in a one-to-one setting. This will help you to get more from your program. You may then choose to join a class or to continue one on one with your physiotherapist.

It is recommended you wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring along a pair of socks and a towel. Bookings are essential.

The exercises are performed at varying levels from basic to advanced and so will be tailored for your needs and fitness level. We endeavor to keep class sizes small in order to achieve this aim. Most private health funds also give a rebate for the Pilates Group Exercise Classes we run.

WHO SHOULD DO PILATES?

Pilates is suitable for men and women of all ages. It is particularly helpful for people who have or are recovering from an injury and for people who are looking for a way to get stronger and more toned muscles. We get great results with people who are starting to feel the effects of the ageing process and who want to stay feeling young, flexible and strong! Athletes who are trying to improve their performance to run further, swim faster and keep playing for longer benefit from Pilates.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO PILATES?

This varies from person to person and depends on the individuals injury and level of activity. The most common attendance is 2 sessions per week. This will help you to achieve great results fast. Some injuries require a more intensive attendance of 3 times a week whilst others are able to achieve their goals by doing a class once a week for maintenance.

PILATES AND PREGNANCY

We run a Mums and Bubs Pilates class specifically for women pre and post pregnancy to improve posture, strengthen abdominals and pelvic floor muscles and for general strength and tone. You are welcome to bring your child along to the class and there is a support person available to help supervise. See the class timetable for more details.
